Gadgets or Widgets ? What are Gadgets and Widgets

As I have read many novels and learned many words through my time. But as I have seen many times the words change through the centuries and creates other meanings. As I read a Robert Browns book Spunyarn and Spindrift , I noticed the term "Gadget" used and is claimed to be the first such use in 1886  Robert wrote Then the names of all the other things on board a ship! I don’t know half of them yet; even the sailors forget at times, and if the exact name of anything they want happens to slip from their memory, they call it a chicken-fixing, or a gadjet, or a gill-guy, or a timmey-noggy, or a wim-wom — just pro tem., you know”. Yet today we use Gadget to describe electronic toys  and accessories for our phones. Now this term became main stream with the earliest documented use of the term gadget in context of software engineering was in 1985 by the developers of AmigaOS .  Now we move on to Widget , today a widget is a stress relief toy , and In a programming context, widget is a generic term for the part of a GUI that allows the user to interface with the application and operating system. These are on cell phones, laptops and tablets, but through the years the word has been use to describe "imaginary objects" used in conversation. The first document usage of the word widget is attributed to the1924 play “Beggar on Horseback”, by George Kaufman and Marc Connelly.
